Fascinated by their story, in the Hengist Trilogy I explore aspects of their life and character, with lashings of artistic licence!
Trilogy III
Now we see an older, weaker and even more vulnerable Hengist. His enemies are arrayed against him. He fears soon he will lose grip on power and with it his life. However he has one deadly enemy as he faces up to what he is convinced is a terminal illness. He writhes and rails, he ponders Horsa’s earlier advice, knowing it’s too late. His legacy is withering in his grasp, as is his body.
A long period of reflection on his past and what the future holds brings a level of acceptance of his fate. Perhaps he’ll be reunited with his brother. Perhaps Kent will go on to greater glory and its peoples appreciate his rule. New life will begin!
