The Hengist Trilogy
For the history of the real (or were they? - ed) Hengist and his brother, Horsa, see:-

Fascinated by their story, in the Hengist Trilogy I explore aspects of their life and character, with lashings of artistic licence!
Trilogy II
Hengist survived the battle of Hengist Ridge with pride intact but it took its toll on his body and mind.
In Trilogy I, Hengist had sought advice from his dead brother, Horsa, on the eve of battle (“Dear brother, you’d know what to do’). Now Horsa replies from beyond the grave! Alas for Hengist it’s not the advice on how to win the battle that he hoped for. A redemptive message and final challenge to create a lasting, positive legacy is presented by his dead brother. At first he rejects the message emphatically. He knows showing weakness will bring a vengeful response.
Horsa ratchets up the rhetoric and reminds Hengist of his early years; formative ones of peace and goodness, and asks him to rekindle it…. If there was a verse 3 we’d know whether this worked… but alas we only have the closing instrumental, which, ending in a triumphal C major chord gives us hope that he harkened to the wise words of his brother…. and perhaps was hung, drawn and quartered as a result…. No documentary or archeological evidence is forthcoming to help us answer this question. He probably just remained an embittered, narcissistic bully and will be exposed in an upcoming #MedievalMeToo campaign!
