The Hengist Trilogy
For the history of the real (or were they? - ed) Hengist and his brother, Horsa, see:-

Fascinated by their story, in the Hengist Trilogy I explore aspects of their life and character, with lashings of artistic licence!
Trilogy I
The scene is set on the eve of battle. Hengist’s brother, Horsa, had been killed in a previous battle, and for all his machismo Hengist is feeling weary and vulnerable… but this chink in his image must not be seen. His fateful dream of lost legacy unsettles him and feels like a harbinger of ill.
He asks his dead brother, Horsa, for advice. Perhaps Horsa was the brain and he the brawn. From within himself he summons up a not entirely convincing rallying message for his men to ‘defend your Hengist Ridge’ knowing that the alternative is ‘death’s eternal night’.
